1990 completely stumped me when it came to music. Luckily Bette Midler was on the charts with a song I really liked, “From a Distance.” The disco era was over, and I really had no idea which way to go and often listened to radio stations that played oldies. “From a Distance” was a song that was written by American singer and songwriter Julie Gold. It was first recorded by Nanci Griffith in her 1987 album Lone Star State of Mind. However, it’s most successful version is the one recorded by Bette Midler, and it became a major hit in 1990. Midler included it in her album Some People’s Lives. The song rose up to number one on the Adult Contemporary chart and won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991. I think it is a wonderful song of hope and inspiration, just what is needed these days.
