This morning's cake disaster

For a few days I've been writing about the scholarship fundraiser today at work--a staff bake sale. I signed up to bake a Devil's Food chocolate cake (cake and frosting from scratch) and decided to use some of the leftover Day of the Dead sprinkles to decorate it.
I made the ganache for the frosting and the cakes yesterday. This morning I whipped the ganache and assembled/frosted/decorated the 3-layer cake. I carefully carried it out to the car and put it on the passenger side floor because I was afraid that it would fall off of the seat if I had to brake suddenly.
I got to work and saw that the top layer had slid off and was up against the passenger door.
I probably could have salvaged it by fixing the frosting but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. As the baking club advisor and someone who is known for good baking skills I would have been embarrassed for anyone to see it in its messed up state.
So I left it in the car. By the time I got out of work my car was chocolate-scented. I immediately took it over to the dumpster and tossed it. I will deal with the frosting mess tomorrow when I take out the garbage. I'm not mad about all of the time that it took but all of the chocolate for the cake and frosting was expensive. Ugh.
