What About Bone Health?

Many of you who read my posts are get up there in age. I often read articles and watch docs about different health aspects affecting older adults. I thought I would pass this information on bone health along to you. Here is what I have found that I thought might be interesting: * Salt from chips, cheeses, cold cuts and breads can cause calcium to be washed from the body. Calcium is the bone builder. You don't have to cut salt from your body intake completely but less that 2,300 milligrams each day is best. * Exercise makes your bones stronger. I used to love to bicycle but had to realize that this activity only exercised the lungs and heart. So, I needed to walk, dance and even visit the weights to keep my legs strong. * Alcohol can interfere with how your body absorbs calcium. Too many cups of coffee and tea can rob your body of calcium. Studies show that the caffeine and phosphorus in these are linked to bone loss. * Smokers have a greater chance of breaks. Inhaling cigarette smoke makes your body less able to form new bone tissue. * Some medications taken over long periods can have a negative effect on your bones. Anti-seizure and glucorticoids can cause bone loss. It's a good idea to check with your doctor.

Thanks for the info. I've had to cut way down on my sodium.

I can't handle a lot of sodium. Every since I was pregnant with my daughter I can feel my fingers swell if I get too much.

@celticeagle I never add any salt to the things I eat; but frozen dinners have way too much sodium. I've checked dozens of dinners and about a dozen of the meal kits/dinners; and they all have too much sodium.

Thanks for the information. I know walking and dancing are recommended to help build bone.

I don't do either. I do leg exercises at night on my bed while watching TV.

@celticeagle That's good too but they say it's weight-bearing that's needed. Perhaps you could attach light leg-weights to get more benefit from the exercises you do.
