A present for when they get home

I’ve been looking after a neighbour’s cat – they have gone on holiday for 3 weeks! They have two young children but are home schooling them which is why they are able to go away for such a long period. Anyway they asked me to check on the cat every few days. They have bought an automatic cat feeder so I wouldn’t have to go every day, but just pop in once a week or so, check that he’s OK and give him a pouch of food for a treat as a change from the dry stuff. I felt a bit mean leaving him so long so I have been calling in every three days or so to give him a treat and a bit of attention. Everything was fine until this week when I took the cat’s water bowl into the kitchen to fill it up and found this dead vole on the counter. It didn’t seem particularly decomposed, thankfully, but it could have been there for a couple of days before I found it. I disposed of it, obviously, and I did let them know so they can be sure to clean the counter-tops particularly well before putting food on there! Poor little thing, I know that mice are not welcome, but they are cute.

They are, and anyway this is a vole not a mouse.

@Fleura They are very similar to mice, we call them "meadow mice" here.

@LadyDuck I guess that's quite a good name. They don't come into houses nor cause any trouble because they just eat grass etc.

It’s a good thing you checked and found that surprise. I hope you clean the litter box when you’re there

He didn't have a litter box, I presume he just uses their garden.

@Fleura That is probably where he got the vole as a welcome home gift

Well, at least they have one less disease spreading animal in their house? I don’t like for anything to die though. I’m glad you’ve been giving the cat some attention. Three weeks is a long time without steady affection.

I used to babysit my neighbor's cat. She was gone all the time. I felt sorry for it being all alone. I ended up with the cat when she moved.
