This makes sense but I had no idea. We all use them at some point to mail important papers back and forth. I have wondered off and on where they got their name. They are named after the capital of the Philipines, Manila. And they were originally made from Manila hemp.

They are made Manila Hemp in tagalog they are made of Abaca.
