My mom is diagnosed of a chronic infection of her tonsils. She's always suffering from tonsilitis almost every week. Her eent doctor advised her to remove it. But her cardiologist says no, because it's no longer advisable at her age of 57 to remove it since our tonsils are the ones blocking bacteria from coming in of our body from the mouth. Can you give me some more insights on this?

Many doctors say that removing your tonsils surgically is more dangerous than they originally thought. There are several risks which is why they don't do it as often as they used to. I'm unclear as to why the cardiologist would say no for a reason unrelated to her heart, though. If she is in danger because she has a weak heart and the surgery is dangerous for that reason, I would listen to the cardiologist. But it seems like the eent doctor is the expert about the tonsils.

I asked my sister and this is what she got to say,
"What other diseases does your mom has?
If there's no other health concern aside from the tonsilitis, in my opinion, I'll go with the cardiologist. I assume that the cardiologist was referred by the eent for clearance, right?
Tonsils serve as immune defense. It became inflamed because of the bacteria that it strained and contained thereby, blocking excess bacteria we don't need and those that are harmful into our body. With increasing age, there is also a decrease in immune system.
Also, the age of your mom is a risk factor. Moreso, if she doesn't have the ideal weight. Recovering from surgery would be difficult since there's a possibility for bleeding."

I had mine removed when I was 16 my son had his removed when he was 3. It is not a dangerous surgery so if it is causeing problem for your mom why not remove then. It is very payfull after it is done for about 2 week it will feel like the sorest throat you have ever had.
