The parents of poor families find it very tough for marriage of their daughters due to prevailing dowry system. Anti-dowry laws are not much effective to eliminate such social practices. The girls are often tortured, even after their marriage, for not bringing adequate dowry. What is your experience and opinion on this issue?

I don't believe in the dowry system at all .I have no experince on the issue but I would hope that changing the beliefs on the issue would be the key .I do not believe people should marry a person because they well get gifts for doing so this to me is not what marriage is about . I have heard that dowlries at one time were the same as wedding gifts there was no limmit or given amount it was simply gifts to help the new couple .I think that is ok but no man should expect his wifes family to support them nor should he look at her as away to get things ,she is a human not something to be bought nor sold . Like all gifts the amount should not matter if the man is looking at the amount of the dowlry not the love of the woman his should not marry her simple as that .

Many thanks for your nice response. I totally agree with you. But this is a stark reallity for many innocent girls. Dowry related atrocities and deaths are being reported almost daily in local news papers. I call up on the mylot communities to strongly condemn and fight against such evil social crime against women.

I think it is totally wrong to torture a girl or a woman for not being able to pay adequate dowry, and if they want their dowry and can not pay it maybe instead of torturing them allow them or their family to work it off through helping out. Not unreasonable work either, or abusive work... I really disagree with the dowry system but I understand why it is an important practice and custom to many, but it should be within reason of what the family can afford. - DNatureofDTrain

Many thanks for your nice response. I totally agree with you. But this is a stark reality and is widely prevalent in many communities. I call the world community to strongly condemn and fight against this humiliating social evil and crime against women.
