It depends on the person and why their buying it. Some people buy the stuff because it's meaningful for them. Other people buy it because they figure they can sell it to someone else for more money. Of course, the memorabilia of a sports hero today could be worth nothing tomorrow if that person is caught in a scandal or something.
Experts on collectibles advise people to collect things only if they really want to collect them, not to try to make money.
But when you consider how much non-collectible junk gets sold on eBay, it almost seems that everything has a willing buyer.

we live in Jacksonville Florida and my husband is a big Jag fan. he has spent lots of money collecting things, mostly smaller things that dont cost more tan $20-30.00. I don't mind, it a nice collection.

It is waste of money, but people love sports and those companies are taking advantage of that and make money while they're at it.
