My stubborn dog troubles

Ok so in june i got this 1/2 chihuaua 1/2 italian greyhound puppy name guissepe. he is un trainable. I have only ever had large dogs so training a small dog like this is very new and difficult for me. He is a good dog, doesn't bark when in his kennel, but he keeps using the bathroom in the house. right now he stays in his kennel at night and when we are at work. when we get up in the morning he goes out and eats his food outside and generaly comes in 45 min to an hour later when i leave for work. when we get home, it's the same thing. i don't like to have him un guarded in the house because he chews up my daughters toys and pees on the floor. he even jumped on the table and relieved himself there once. This dog is really testing my patience, REALLY. I keep reminding myself that he is a puppy (8 months old) but other people are able house train their dogs a lot sooner that this. did i just get a bad combination of animal or am i doing something totally wrong here?

believe it or not, we have tried all that. the only time he responds to a treat is to go in his kennel. I learned to train dogs with a search and rescue dog trainer. she helped me with my husky who compared to this dog was an angel :). I've only ever dealt with big dogs (huskies, golden retrievers, dobermans etc). Hopefully as he matures, he'll respond better to training. he's not a very hyper dog like my husky was, she would never sit down when company came over. but he is a chiuahua and a bit nippy at times with company and my daughter. she is very tollerant of him and he of her so we havent had any aggression problems with him and i don't expect to either. he does have access to water, but he is soiling his kennel. i find this od as dogs don't soil where they sleep and he sleeps in his kennel every night (of course I clean and scrub down his kennel everyday and change his bedding). If you know of any other techniques for small dogs or what type of correction collar to use with him b/c they don't make them small enough for this type dog, i'd be so appreciative of it. my husky did not respond to anything except a pinch collar and even though it looked like a medievil tourture device, it was much more safe for her than the choke. Thanks again for the comment! Happy Holidays!

I have a long haired chihuahua and when I leave the house, I put him in his crate. It really has helped withe behavioral problems when we're not here to keep an eye on him. He's a good dog but he can be stubborn. You might want to try it too - they aren't that expensive at the pet store.

thanks! I do keep him in a crate which is what i call a kennel. he's a good dog i think or has the potential to be a good dog. i bought an electronic noise emitting device and he has responded well to the come command so now i don't have to stand out the back door yelling "guissepe!"

Is it possible that it's a bit like an attention seeking thing - you're going off to work and leaving him all alone, perhaps try (if you haven't already) leaving a radio or the tv playing when you go out so he doesn't feel so alone, or getting someone to pop in during the time you're out to let him outside to do his business. Other than that you've probably tried everything else I could suggest :-) Hope you get it under control soon.
