I have noticed that on entering an elevator that people always hit the button more than once. I do this my self. So does pushing the elevator button more than once make it arrive faster? or is this just an unconscious act? What do you think

It just means people are impatient. Or that they are skeptical about the button actually working. Or they have OCD. Take your pick.

It certainly won't. Guess some do that to ensure they have pushed the button hard enough for the machine to activate. What's worse? Some will press both the up and down buttons which will only slow down the process if there's heavy usage. Also, the same can be seen at traffic light junctions.

It does not suprise me that people would push both the up and down button. Either they can't make up their mind or they are very impatient

I certainly hope it's an unconscious act. I think most of us are impatient today, always in a hurry, which is why we push the buttons more than once. I like the response above where the person gave at least 3 reasons and one was OCD. That would be my old boss. He even wanted us to make 6 copies of everything we put in files. LOL. He was an attorney, and I guess he charged by the pound.

I think we have this idea that the first push did not registar and so we need to do it again and again. thanks for your thought. Maybe your old boss had a fear of losing copies

That is so funny cause I do it and notice others that do it too.I really don't think it makes it go any faster.I think it is just something for us to do while waiting for it.

I'm sure it doesn't make the elevator come a bit faster by pushing the button more than once. Maybe it shows impatience to push it more than once, or maybe the person wants to be certain that the button made contact electronically to tell the elevator to come to go to a certain floor.

Elevator Buttons - Push Elevator Buttons
No, it cannot make the life/elevator go any faster but I think that most people do push the buttons more than once simply to make sure that they have pushed the button for the floor they want to get out on. There might be an element of impatience in it of course but more than likely to be a habit. Also have you noticed that when people get to the pedestrian crossing many of them will always push the button, irrespective of how many other people are there. Again it doesn't make it change to "walk" any faster, but for me it is a case of being sure that the button has been pushed. LOL

I've never repush a lit up elevator button in my life, but am absolutely AMAZED by the dolts that come after me and push it, not once, not just twice, but SEVERAL times. AS IF! LOL! I want to jump up and down telling the congregation that amassed at the same elevator that it will NOT come any faster! Some look embarassed when they do it without thinking and look around at the others to see if they noticed. I want to laugh out loud when that happens! I've seen a doctor pound at a button, broke the plastic shield and inadvertently caused a shut down! Those poor people inside that elevator! I laughed out loud shaking my head, and turned to go to the back elevators. Meanwhile, all bells were ringing in that shaft and the doctor who broke it was completely flustered when security arrived. I wish I stayed to hear the excuse, but that dud made me late for an appointment.

Yes. Me too. I too push the button more than once inspite of knowing that the elevaor dosent arrive any faster. As you said it is just an unconscious act and it has nothing to do with the spped f the elevator.

I don't think pishing the button more than once is any faster. I would be more worried about jamming it up.

I think people just do it without thinking. Makes for a discussion.
