The taxi dropped us at the entrance to the hotel and it was only then that I realised that we had to walk our way down! I noticed there were big steps and little steps, close together and further apart, easier some, more difficult others. I even counted them and there were 198!!The hotel was very cute, especially our room, which was narrow, but it had many warm touches. It was only later that I realised that it must be only 2m wide, and it was the bed that gave me the clue! Our room was small, but there were two floors! I think it was the big mirror along the wall what made the place look bigger than it was.
There was also a table and chairs outside, bougainvilleas around and the beautiful scenery stretched out before us! Views from the hotel were spectacular, so much blue, be it sea or sky! We noticed there were a few cruise ships on the bay and later they all blew their sirens, creating a happy atmosphere, but as the sun started setting they all left one by one, leaving just darkness and silence behind.
Local boat tour
We breakfast alone the next morning, but there is a power blackout in the hotel, which we later discover affects the whole island, but at least we had water for our morning shower! We walked down to the funicular and found it was not going because of the blackout and we must walk all the way down, or ride a donkey! We walked down! The boat stopped first at a volcano, and everybody went down and walked for about 1km to have a look.
The second stop is at some hot springs, and most people dived in. I talked to some young Asian girls, who were always late to return to the boat, and they told me they came from Malaysia and Singapore and were celebrating the end of their university studies.
A fishing village was the next stop, and we walked in search of a restaurant to eat. We settled for one at the end of the beach and are happy we did, as we later saw the captain and his crew eating there as well—a good sign! I opt for the seafood rice and find it delicious, although I noticed everybody has two dishes not just one! We took many pictures, and I really enjoyed the fishing village and the boats on the bay.
The boat returns, and the funicular is working, so that is the way we get up to the top. There is still a lot that needs to be walked, so I sit to have a drink in a cafeteria while watching the donkeys returning, but with no passengers this time.
Greek moments
That evening we went looking for restaurants, studied many menus and settled for one with a good view. Gernot ordered lamb chops, while I went for tzatziki and stuffed grape vines, which I ate together with pita bread! It was nice sitting out enjoying the local food while listening to nice music. We discovered that in Santorini they also have lava wine, so we ordered half a bottle. As one of the other guests was leaving, he pointed to a wallet on the floor, so Gernot picked it up and realised it was his! He was happy, as he had just withdrawn €90 from the teller machine!
We had breakfast outside the next morning and the temperature was just perfect! I particularly enjoyed the fruit salad, bread and coffee. Wolfgang joined us later on and we took pictures, as we noticed a new cruise ship on the bay. We concluded that perhaps they travel during the night.
Gernot and I spent practically the whole day just sitting outside relaxing; either chatting or reading, while having occasional swims in the pool. We also enjoyed a gin and tonic and later had a light lunch. It was a fresh salad, with salmon, avocado and a mustard dressing and we have it with bread and a beer. The waiter was very friendly and he told us he was trained in Germany, so no wonder he could speak German so well! I noticed how important blue is for locals as they use it to paint doors, window shutters, fences and details everywhere! We walk to the city in the afternoon and buy a Greek recipe book. As we had walked a lot, we stop at the reception for beer and thus find that the cost of each is €4! In the evening we go to the restaurant Wolfgang recommended and I am glad we did, as the place was friendly and the food very good! We had an assortment of entrees and a fish and calamari plate! There might have been no view, but the service and quality of food compensated for that! In the evening Wolfgang shows us a quicker way to get to our hotel! We sit outside when we return and drink a beautiful dessert wine. Later they called to tell me they had found my earrings on a table. I was lucky!
