can you imagine House without Hugh Laurie?

I honestly think that the magic ingredient of house is Hugh Laurie. He brought so much life to the character. I can't imagine anyone else for this role.

Yes, he definitely makes the show. He manages to pull of the character with aplomb. Anybody else would have made him either a genuinelly annoying twit, or a miser with a heart of gold.
Hugh Laurie manages to portray the characters as somebody who really only cares about curing diseases, with the fact that it makes people happy a mere side-effect, and not necessarily a wanted one.

Yeah--it is all about solving the puzzle. You're right it is like a compulsion with him. He has to solve to puzzle or it drives him crazy. That is what makes him a good doctor but also hinders him from connecting with everyone. He focuses so much on the disease/symptoms that he fails to see the person, except to know that everything out of their mouths are lies (which is usually true). I think he does care, to some extent, especially about his child patients. They seem to be able to break his defenses. They have to show him with some kind of feelings otherwise people wouldn't relate to him.

Absolutely not! Would not watch it since it would become just another doctor show. Hugh is a stand alone with a supporting cast. Have been told that there is a real doctor like him in a hospital a town over. Hope I never have to see him, however I would love to be able to meet him.
