Is there any way of telling if an e-mail address is valid without sending a message to the e-mail address?

I dont think so. You need to send a mail to confirm it by mailer demon failure message.

e mail address is used fro messaging to others friends.

No it is not possible to say email is valid or not if it is in the correct pattern of ----@---.com if any thing in this format is there then it is not possible to verify this.....
