Is there such thing as "professional journalism" anymore?

I've been part of a lot of major events that got a lot of press. From Desert Shield/Storm and Hurrican Andrew down to local floods, forest fires and snow emergencies.
Through it all, not once did I see what appeared in the papers or on tv news match up very well with the actual events on the ground.
I've been interviewed by the press around a dozen times. In every case they took my quotes out of context, or changed them completely.
I don't think I remember the press getting a major story right in the last 20 years.
I know there has to be some honest people in the press.... but I'm wondering why the majority just don't give a crap.

They go with what sells or gets the better ratings. That's really all there is to it.

So, what you are saying is, they salivate over bloody bodies, just to make a buck. Gotcha.

Bascily. It's what sells. People don't care about "feel good" stories or even the truth. The only time you hear "good news" is around Christmas. After that all bets are off and it's back to blood and gore.

True, and I don't expect them to sugarcoat things, but why do they tell outright lies? Especially when, so often, they end up being called on their lies.
Seriously, I'm wondering why the few honest people in the press put up with it.
They can't all be lying scum, can they?
