The best OTC product you can use is Frontline Plus. It's a monthly, waterproof topical solution applied to the back of your pet's neck. It kills flea & tick adults, eggs, larvae and chewing lice. It gets into your dog's blood system, so every flea, tick, chewing lice that bites ~ dies! You must wait two days after bathing for application or wait two days after application to bathe them.
You may notice some scratching a couple of weeks after application, but you have to remember that when he/she was scratching, the eggs were being knocked off and will later hatch, so it may take a couple of months to be completely flea-free. Or you can treat your pet with Frontline Plus and bomb your house for fleas ((get one that works on eggs too)) just make sure that you follow the bombing directions to a tee.... like removing yourself and animals for hours.
If you are looking for a cheaper solution....here are a few home remedies:
FOR HOME:
Stash Earl Grey tea: tear open bags and scatter onto carpets. Vacuum in a few days.
Borax: sprinkled on carpeting, smothers fleas.
Salt and/or Dried Peppermint: sprinkle over carpeting before vacuuming.
FOR OUTDOORS:
Diatomaceous Earth ((pure, not chemical like at a pool store)): Sprinkle on dry ground, after a few days, rake it in, then water it in. You will want to wear a mask and keep your pet off the treated area for a few days. It isn't poisonous but irritating.
Grow Citronella & Mint around the kennel and/or property.
FOR YOUR PET:
Groom daily
Add Brewer's Yeast and Garlic ((powder, not fresh)) to your pup's diet. Also, can be directly rubbed into fur. Fleas find the taste bitter. (there are tons of home made dog-biscuit recipes on the Internet, I found a basic one and added these ingredients)
For home made sprays that are all-natural:
1 TBS. Citronella, 2C. Vinegar, 1C water. Also, Skin-So-Soft and Eucalyptus are good preventatives.
FLEA & TICK REPELLANTS:
TICK: lavender, basil, lemon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary.
FLEA: cedar wood, lemon grass, peppermint, bay leaf
These natural oils/herbs can be added to 1C. Vodka, 2 C. vinegar & 1C. water to make a spray...... or all of them can be grown in a garden to deter the fleas from the yard!
I HATE BUGS!
If you know some I missed, please add them to your response.

I'm sure a lot of people, in colder climates, are waiting for the frost to freeze those little blood-suckers, but fleas actually survive the freeze! When the spring weather arrives, they will thaw out with the ground and continue to bite us and/or our pets. Did you know that they don't like the taste of iron? So if you have low iron, you're more susceptible to getting flea-bitten!
