Generousity - Could it be giving without asking for return?

Christmas season has just passed by and almost everyone partake in gift giving and forgiving. The question if Christmas spirit is to give, do we expect something to receive in return? I think its better to give wholeheartedly without waiting what to receive. I remember a passage in bible says: Don't let what your left hand does be known to your right hand.

In theory giving without expecting anything is possible , but in reality as per our human nature if we are not expecting anything back yet we do expect the appreciation for our gift that is why we keep asking ,did you like it. So some prinicples are tough to follow.
