Spinning with a drop spindle

Does anyone have any advice on using a drop spindle? I can make yarn with it, but it's pretty slubby and not all that secure. Has anyone actually spun enough of their own yarn with a drop spindle and then made something out of it? What did you make? I have a wooden drop spindle and also one I made out of a discarded CD and a peg with a hook. I would like to get better at it.
