I have heard it said many times that we should look out for ourselves because no one else will. I wonder if that is why the world is the way it is today? I chose to take care of my siblings because my step dad was very sick with cancer for many years and after he passed away my mom stopped taking her insulin and became very ill, she passed away last year. During all of this I had to step up because my little sister was still in middle school and one brother has MS and another was in high school. My husband, friends, and co-workers over the years told me that it was not my responsibilty. But I just want to tell everyone that it was and is. That is why we are so desensitized and cold because we forgot how to be compassionate and selfless. The world does not revolve around us. It is not only our responsibility to look out for our family but what happened to The Golden Rule? Do unto others as you would have done to you. Would any of us have wanted to be forgotten and abandoned because it wasn't a relatives responsibility to care for you? Human Decency..Empathy..Compassion..Bravery..Selfless..Values...Morals..we have replaced all of these words with the words..me..me..me..

What you have done over the years can be considered selfish. (I am not saying that you were being selfish).
The reason being that taking care of your siblings gives you a sense of happiness and maybe you wouldn't have been able to live with yourself if you didn't take care of them. I think it is all a matter of your own values and morals, because if you think of it more as a responsibility then it will be a chore but if you really want to do it then it will come naturally to you.

I completely agree with you. I really believe that in a time where our choices are put above the needs of others we have really lost the true essence of life. I firmly believe that we should put the needs of others before ourselves and love people unconditionally.
May God bless you richly for taking care of your family!
