Mia Hamm was probably the best female football/soccer player in the world. She was the youngest woman to play on the US National Team. She won the FIFA World Player of the Year twice. She was chosen by Pelé as one of the world's 100 best soccer players. She won two Gold Medals one Silver Medals in the Olympics and two out of three Woman's World Cups. In addition to her soccer prowess she is also known for her foundation dedicated to bone marrow research. Because of a commitment to a foundation activity, she turned down the President's invitation to attend a reception for the US soccer team which had just won their second Woman's World Cup.
When she retired she had scored 158 goals in international games...more than 50 more than any other player in the world male or female at that time.
