A common metabolic pathway is a possible mechanism is drug and alcohol abuse. Alcohol affets endoneous opioids and other neurotrasnmitters including GABA, glutamate and dopamine. The increased opioid function is probably responsbile for the euphoric and annaesthtic effects of alcohol and also for the reinforceing effect of heavy drinking. The activating inhbitory effet of chloride influx mediated by GABA- A type receptors migh be contributng to the anxiolytic and seadative effects of alcohol.
