At the giant Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, Windows Vista operating system stole the show. One application automatically created an impressive composite photograph from two images with just a few clicks and drags.
Windows Home Server by Microsoft and HP is the result of two billions pictures taken last year.
"This one company has made us, as a mankind, much better, more efficient, and has raised the standard of living for all the citizens of the world," said the emcee introducing Bill Gates.

i think that Microsoft with its operationg systems made world a better place - we all can use internet and all this stuff which without Windows would be not possible.
I know that there are some other operating systems like Apple , Linux etc. but remember that Windows was first one who gave us oportunity to see what computer is like - maybe without a Windows breakthrough there would be no computer boom :)

The slogan "embrace, extend, and extinguish" is often used to describe Microsoft's strategy for entering product categories involving widely-used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences to disadvantage its competitors. This business tactic blast them to stardom, may be great to the general public who use PCs from personal to business/office use even R&D, but not to its competitors

Before Windows, every computer manufacturer had their own operating language. I started working with computers in high school. I owned an Apple IIe (yes, I'm that old), but the school used Radio Shack TRS-80s. Both programming languages were similar, but had subtle differences and their programs would not work on the other. So, anytime I did my homework on my Apple at home, I had to basically rewrite it when I got to school. That all changed when the school got smart and upgraded to Apples.
Without Windows, we'd still be in that place. So, in that respect, Microsoft has done a great service to mankind. Has it make mankind better, though? There could be points of debate there. People are less reliant on their own brains, now. I have seen people who can't make change at the grocery store unless the computer tells them how much it is. Maybe we've gotten a little lazy because of it.
Let's not forget, though, the world's two biggest oxymorons: Military Intelligence and Microsoft Works. LOL

High quality information. I never work on Apple. Design is much easier on Apple, but I get use to PC.

I haven't worked on an Apple since those days on the IIe. I use a PC and find it adequate for all my Photoshop and blogging needs.

Here's a Microsoft joke:
A pilot is flying a small, single-engine, charter plane with a couple of really important executives on board into Seattle airport. There is fog so thick that visibility is 40 feet, and his instruments are out. He circles looking for a landmark and after an hour, he is low on fuel and his passengers are very nervous. At last, through a small opening in the fog he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. Circling, the pilot banks and shouts through his open window: "Hey, where am I?". The solitary office worker replies: "You're in an airplane.". The pilot immediately executes a swift 275 degree turn and executes a perfect blind landing on the airport's runway five miles away. Just as the plane stops, the engines cough and die from lack of fuel. The stunned passengers ask the pilot how he did it. "Elementary," replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100% correct but absolutely useless; therefore, I knew that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is three minutes away on a course of 87 degrees."
