Will Gas prices ever be the same again?

For a while now I have watched gas go up and down. Now around my area gas is anywhere between 2.19-2.25. Right before Thanksgiving the gas had gotten down to 1.98, but after the holidays it steadily started rising back up again. I was hoping that the gas would go down again but a penny here a penny there. What causes the gas prices to go up and down, is it the price of the crude oil? If that's the case, when crude oil is lower how come our gas prices aren't lowered. I would of thought by now since the holidays are over the gas prices would have gone down, but it hasn't? Could someone shed some light on this subject for me.

Yeah, gas prices are kind of a scam. I think they are on the way down though. Crude oil is at around $54 - $55 a barrel which is really low compared to what it has been. They attribute to an unusually warm winter and thus less heating costs. Hopefully, that will translate into lower prices at the pumps but there are so many other factors. Certain states, for example, have higher imbedded taxes on gas. Then you always have the problem of there being a limited amount of refineries. It will probably drop here for a little while but by summer I bet things will go up again. The good news is that commodities are yesterday's news so a lot of funds are pulling out of oil. I think insane speculation in oil futures and what not pushed the prices higher.

Very good response and very detailish. I never understood how our gas prices got to where they are which coming from crude oil and all the other factors such as our warmer winter. I think the gas stations have something to do with it to....They always raising the prices...Probably for their store...

I doubt they will ever go down that much or stay low long. They will charge it because they know they can.Theey know people have to have a certain amount or they cant get to work ect.

On the news this morning they say it's going to drop alot. I don't know who to believe because my husband heard yesterday that OPEC is going to stop production so the price per barrel goes up again and that way we will have to pay more. I think they just want to get richer. Someone needs to design a car that doesn't need gas and not those battery operatered ones either. We just need to make more cars able to use corn fuel. We always seem to have plenty of that.
