Toyota is creating an alcohol detection system. Steering wheel sensors will determine driver's blood alcohol level. It detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption. Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levela of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream. The system could also kick in if the sensers detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver's pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt. Toyota hopes to fit cars with the system by the end of 2009. Nissan manufacturing, has already been experimenting with breathalyzer-like devices that could detect if a driver was drunk. Similar technologies, such as alcohol ignition interlocks, are in use in the U.S. and elsewhere. Would you pay more to own one?

This is fantastic! I hadn't heard of any of these technologies. Of course, I am bad to not read about technology....which might explain why I am such a technological weenie. This would be great. Of course, around my parts, the ones doing the drunk driving aren't in nice new Toyotas, they are in dlapidated, rust-ridden rattle traps!

My brother once owned a car with a breathalizer in it he bought it off a friend of his who was caught drinking and driving to much so the court had a breatalizer installed that couldn't be took out unless the court had it ordered to be took out. He sold it to my brother who got rid of it very shhortly after. But i think that it should be installed in all cars that way there will be less killings due to drunk drivers.

I think its excellent. they should make this standard in all new cars. I would not pay extra for it though as I rarely drink and I never drink and drive.

That's a great thing for all of the drivers around the world, hope that it will reduce the numbers of accidents due to drunk-driving. Every car manufacturers should also do that!;)

What a great idea, it would certainly stop people from drink driving and save people perhaps getting killed. I'm not totally innocent in this i have done it in the past but i hate myself for doing it. Let's hope they bring it in soon.
