When you get paid do you firstly pay your rent/home loan, phone and power, buy the food you need etc or do you go shopping spending money on stuff you don't need, go to the pub or other silly stuff then whinge because you don't have enough money to pay the bills?

Yes, I know about curtailing the shopping. It's amazing how you can chop items out, still have lots to eat and yet be able to fit your budget. Sometimes we think with our stomach not our head when we make out our shopping list. I know I do.

I think the best advice my mum has ever given me was to never go shopping on an empty stomach! You always buy more because you're hungry and you think "oh I really fancy that tonight" and you get something that wasn't on your list but if you go after lunch, you're more likely to just stick to a list!

I'm on a fixed income so my wages for the month stays the same. I always deduct the bills first. Especially setting aside the rent. Then I take about $100 out for unforseen emergencies. After that, the rest I divide between food, gas, clothing, entertainment, and ect. If I don't use the emergency money that month, it's into the savings account until I can invest it.

Great idea to have something put aside for contingencies.

My wife and I used to always spend our money fast and as soon as we got it, worrying about our bills later. We usually could pay our bills easily, but every now and then it would get bad and we would be a little short. We have learned that all bills get paid first before any thing that is not necessary is bought. This has made it a lot easier to budget our money, and we actually have more than before.

let's try this again. i typed it out and then it said i wasn't connected to the internet. uhh. anyways. i pay the rent first and then i buy groceries and the essentials. then i pay the power and cable. since i'm out of work my grandma has helped me pay the car payment and insurance. so i give her what i can. then whatever is left i get gas with. i don't go on shopping sprees and risk not having a place to stay or power or food to eat. if i do get some extra money then i know my bills are taken care of and i can spend it on what i want. you feel much better when you dont waste your money.

I pay my rent first, then my car. I keep enough cash on hand so I can buy food when I need to. Then I pay the phone and other bills.

Paying my mortgage is my first priority. I must have a roof over my head. Then money is put aside to cover that month's heating, electricity, gas, and telephione bills, and to buy food. Also to pay for my cats Pet Insurance. A proportion is them saved for holidays etc., and if there is any left, we will go out, and have a few good nights out.

My partner and I share responsibility for the bills. All the ones I pay get paid first before I do anything else, then I will get food shopping, then there is not usually anything left over for anything else! My partner on the other hand will always pay his bills on time but often some of the money comes out of his overdraft because he's already spent his money before it's in the bank. The only way he manages to pay the rent is because it comes out on the same day as his wages go in! He will waste money in the pub and on things he doesn't need (always for himself, it's not as if he even thinks of me or the kids when he's buying stuff we don't need) and then he'll moan that he has no money even though, I normally work out that he should have a fair bit left after he's paid his bills.

I always set my priorities. As soon as I got my pay, I firstly set aside an amount enough for my younger brother's tuition fee bills for the next exam, then I pay my house bills, and grab some needed items at the grocery. I also tried to deposit some amount for my savings, though sometimes I miss this coz of real tight budget. I don't usually go shopping for unnecessary stuffs. I only buy things that are really needed coz I don't wanna end up asking people to lend me money. :)
