search engine optimisation

can anyone tell me the best way to get a good search engine ranking on my new website,I need to attract visitors to it if i want to earn some ad revenue,but every where i look on the net for seo they either want me to pay for it or add links from their sites i have submitted to yahoo and to google but that does not attract visitors,please help.thanks in advance .....jimmy

The first tip I can give you is new, original content and regular updates etc. You mention you've already submitted it to a couple of search engines (there's many more out there :-) ) but that can sometimes take weeks if not months to get your site indexed. Set up a blog and put a link to your site in it - ping the blog which informs the SE that's there's something new so they send spiders running, regular updates keeps them coming back.
Add your site to relevant directories and forums (not all directories require links back).
There's a couple of tips for you. I'd be happy to go into more detail, and a program I'm part of is in the process of updating its free seo instructions (and that's just a very small part of the free help it gives ) just give me a yell if you want some more information.
