With Marriage, Why is so Much Importance/Emphasis

Our Wedding Day - Mike and me after our ceremony. Doesn't he look proud?
Thanks Mom, and everybody, for all you've done to help us have a great wedding day.

Why is so much importance placed on the ceremony and reception? People are so concerned about these events and seemingly not as concerned about the Union they are entering into. My husband and I had a small wedding; people from the church, and family and friends really helped make our day such a success. My cousin made our cake as her gift to us; she was also the photographer and I scrapbooked our pictures. People from the church picked flowers, decorated, and made our food. The youth from the church were our servers. My Mom, I'm so thankful to God for her, planned everything. I basically just had to show up. Now my husband and I have been married for 7 years and have 2 children and a happy marriage. We had no debt from our wedding day (no stress there), and we even bought our wedding rings with cash.
