how to get back compressed files on xp?

my emails on outlook express have been periodically compressed. i work on xp. now, how can i get these back? i don't seem to find them. i thought they would be always there to find, just compressed to occupy less disc space. where are they now? i hope i haven't lost them, because some of the mails were really important. can you help?
