Belkin 802.11g Wireless Adapter Issues

I have been through the Belkin customer service team with no real results so I figured I would throw this out to the computer people at MtLot to see if anyone has any advice. I am running a wireless adapter on my computer; it is feeding off of a neighbors connection (she is aware of it and knows that I am using her signal). For what ever reason the Belkin Wireless Utiliy Program just disappears from the system tray at the bottom of the screen. No error messages, no warning, it just goes away. There are times when the computer starts up and it runs fine without the monitor but then I have no way of knowing who I am connecting to or if I am even connected. The green blinking light on the adapter is usually my only way of knowing if I am online or not. I am running Windows XP Pro, have turned off the Zero Configuration and played around with all the settings. I have the latest drivers for this (version 2011) and have installed and uninstalled the sfotware about ten times hoping that things will work correctly. I previously ran Windows 98 and didn't have a single problem with this wireless adapter but with XP it seems to have a mind of it's own. My hard drive failed and when I had the new one installed they put XP Pro on even though I gave them the software for 98. Do you have any idea what could be causing the adapter module to just stop running? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
