Obsession with the rich and famous?

Why do we have a national obsession with the rich and famous? I mean, remember that ad for Carl's Hamburgers that Paris did a few years back...the controvery over it garnered the chain more than 24 hours straight of running the commercial itself? Do we really care that Lindsey's been sober for 2 days and "it's really hard"? Was it necessary to watch the most public of Scientologists jump up and down on Oprah's couch? Why are their egos stroked so often by the public's insatiable need to read every detail of their lives? I am only concerned if it's a behavior my child wants to emulate (like Nicole Richie's "starved" look or Britney's "naked kitty" look). Imagine if the stars came up with a way to charge their fans for a sneak peek into their lives? Are you obsessed with the stars and if so, why?

Hi scorpiobabes, I was obsessed with stars when I was younger, especially pop stars but now I couldn't really care less what they get up to. Most of it is hype by the media anyway and I do feel some people get persecuted. Not sure what magazines you have over there but we have some mags dedicated to the stars lives and make their money by putting photos of 'fat' stars in there (Like no fatter than my finger or they have caught them at a funny angle) I can't believe people will buy this rubbish either!

I was too, but it never really ruled my life (or else the stars and media weren't as prominent). While I don't think it was a conspiracy to kill Princess Diana, I do think the paparazzi bear some responsibility (the driver more)--chasing her vehicle during a time in her life that she wanted to rebuild it was ridiculous! Of our magazines, I think People (found online at people.com; there's a cover story with an unflattering shot of Tyra Banks (she has gained weight after her children, but still has a relatively flat tummy!) She's using that to demonstrate that being ultra thin is NOT the way to go! Something like that I would buy as a teaching tool for my teenaged daughter, not to read the gossip.

I don't know about anyone else but I have no interest whatsoever in their private lives .. I can be interested in the 'official' lives, like what new film they've just made or if they get nominated for an award .. but I rarely take any notice of the gossip columns .. I have a pet name for those hollywood ultra stick thin waifs .. I call them x-ray people because if the sun is shining brightly you can pracically see right through them .. why more of them don't just keel over and die I have no idea but they look as if they haven't had a decent half slice of toast for weeks .. their shopping bills must be minute !

thank god someone besides me is NOT obsessed with them! I'm keeping an eye on nicole richie; hopefully my daughter won't get the same idea to starve herself to look like that. I don't think it's attractive either. I usually pay attention to the 'real' stuff--awards, new movies, etc. but that's it! I love your nickname for the skinny twigs--it's so funny!

I totally do nor get this fascination but it is running rampant especially in the young people of today. I had to work really hard with my ex's daughter to get her away from the money and material obsession. Her mother had this child convinced she should only marry for money and so on. Come on this girl is 10 years old! Thank God I was able to make a positive impact with her and her younger brother. As I mentioned I don't get it and just blame it on people being nosy or having to much free time on their hands.
