I do not believe it to be true, mainly because there is no published proof. Modern science requires proof, and when that proof is corroborated by different investigators, it can then be taken as a fact.
With Ayurveda, the problem is that ayurvedic medicines are not yet standardised in spite of government efforts. Some ayurvedic medicines are now manufactured by Dabur and other ayurvedic medicine manufacturers. But there are no studies to my knowledge which prove that any of them cure even stage I cancers. Just one person tom-toming his achievement in curing such and such cancer does not prove anything. Some cancers are known to regress (cure themselves) for reasons not known. So proof is possible only when sufficient no. of patients are treated and proved to be cured.

true, but if they are already claiming that it does cure cancer as they say, then wouldnt it have been broadcast as at least a "new hope in the fight against cancer" type of segment?

'Cancer' is a broad term for a variaty of cancer conditions. Therefore, one can not give a general straight forward answer as "YES" or 'NO".
As far as my experience is concerned, my answer would be both Yes and No. There are many Ayurvedic treatments that can cure certain cancers if detected at early stages. There are strong medicine where Mercury, Sulphur, gold, Arsanic and such other minerals are used for treating Cancers. All depend on the state at which the treatments are started. If the cancer condition is at a later stage no system of medicine can cure. Ayurveda is a highly scientific Indian system of medicine. That is why the western world is gradually embarking on herbo-mineral medicines.
