was relegion actually formed so that people could actually follow a particular code of conduct? so as to say that religion was actually a set of rules or a a disciplinary code which suited people at dat particular time, rather than an actual attempt to spiritualize people?

religion was formed to make ppl to follow some particular code of conduct..... ya it was started long back to unite everyone and make them to follow set of rules designed by the starter... i cant say that their actual attenpt was to spiritualize ppl coz a religion like buddism came in the middle which was based on spirituality.... and even in hinduism there was sprituality but the only proof for that might be the holy books.. but ppl were not forced to be spiritual they were jst made to follow the religion...

i think religion plays a unifying role in the life of people.people from all sections of society can identify themselves wid each other, also it gives a common set of beliefs and festivals, another way in which religions unite people
