how can i convert my itunes MP3 format to a lesser byte

lesser byte rate or space for my MOTOROLA SLVR 7 MP3... most of the songa are so good and compatible, but theres really a big byte, and my memory is getting low... what will i have to do to retain the music format but only lessen its rate so i can save more...
any help in there...
