I used to use Pagemaker a long time ago and it was a good program. But, I don't really know about the newest versions. I used Open Office for my documents. It's free and you can save it into MS Word or Excel formats. It has most of the same features as the MS products as well.

All I ever use is Microsoft Office. Once you get the hang of Excel is is fantastic for keeping my checkbook balances.

If you get on an OS other than Windows you'll find other text editors. I know there were several on the Linux machines here at school. Open Office, Nedit, and Pico are the only ones that come to mind for me but I know there were more. Or I know I've used Notepad several times when I had to write some code.
