Familiar stories

Have you ever read stories, fictional stories, that took place where you live? How do you feel when you read those? I grew up in Toronto and Joy Fielding's last two books took place in Toronto and I loved reading them, especially when she mentioned the street my aunt lived on. Margaret Atwood's "Cat's Eye" took place right in my neighbourhood. She even referred to my school as well as the knickname the public school used to call it (they probably still do). That story blew me away. The story itself was about me too. It was about a young girl who felt like a third wheel. How cool is that? My daughter picked up a book at her school library this week. It is called "The Lost Treasure of Casa Loma". Casa Loma is in Toronto where I grew up. It is run by the Kiwanis Club of which my father was a member for 50 years. Last year my mother took me and my children on a tour of the castle. My daughter was thrilled to see this book, though I snatched it out of her hands and am reading it first! LOL! It's a YA book, a quick read for me. Anybody read any fictional stories taking place in real places that are close to them? (because some authors use fictional places).

Stephen King's newer novel "Cell" starts off in Boston, and that's where I live. It was pretty cool to read as I knew the exact area he was talking about. He even referenced an ice cream truck that has been parked near the public gardens for as long as I can remember. There were some artistic liberties takes with some of the streets and geography to make things easier in the book, but for the most part it was pretty accurate and game some great details of the area. That made it really fun, and even more creepy to read the begining of the story, becuase I could imagine even more what it would really be like in the city I live if cell phone signals caused people to go insane.

I am writing a novel which is taking place in the neighbourhood I grew up. I am being as accurate as I possibly can without making the trip down there to see if there is a house that looks exactly the one I describe. It's fun and I hope whoever reads my novel will like it.

This is weird .. my sister rang me yesterday morning to say she had read a short story set in our home town .. she even knew where all the little houses were that the author wrote about and spotted a 'mistake' in location of one area of town (although of course Authors licence allows him/her to put what he likes where he likes) .. we ended up chatting about all the places that had special meaning for us when we lived at home .. Then I find this discussion .. how odd to have MyLot reflect what just happened in real life ..! I have read books myself where they are loosely based on places i know or have been to .. it kind of makes me lose 'my place' in the book .. because while I'm reading about places I know about I somehow seem to lose the gist of the story hehe !!

Can't think of any where I live, but I can think of a few in familliar places where I have spent a great deal of time. This discussion in itsself could fall into that category since I live in Guelph, and visit Toronto often. It's really cool when something like that pops up. Thanks for getting us all thinking about those familliar stories.

I've not read any fictional stories from my area but I've read nonfiction ones like Conspiracy of Brothers (I actually knew ppl in that book) and Lethal Marriage (about Bernardo and Holmolka) which took place not far from where I lived and worked....
