Chronic ear infections

I just had to take my 5 and a half month old to the doctor for the second time in less than a month for an ear infection. They gave him stronger antibiotics this time in hopes that it completely clears up. The pediatrician told me that if he continues to get them we will have to look at possibly putting tubes in his ears. (he has acid reflux and they told me that sometimes babies with this have more ear infections because the fluid comes back up and settles in the ear canal) I have heard of it and think it is a fairly common practice, but dont really know what it entails. Has anyone ever had to have this done? Did it help? Or should I try to avoid it at all costs?

My twin brothers had them when we were growing up and they did help. I do remember my mother making them wait until they were 2 and even then they had to have repeat procedures to replace the tubes with bigger ones. I had trouble with chronic ear infections until a few years ago and I found ear candling. This is an indian remedy that works for me. The candles themselves are made of cheesecloth and beeswax and can be purchased at your local health food store. I don't know about using them on an infant though. I also found that taking an allergy medicine with a decongestant helped to dry up the fluid trapped behind my eardrums. ARe the antibiotics liquid drops if so ask your doctor to try oral antibiotics instead. I found that my infections got worse on the drops because it was only adding fluid to ear instead of drying it up.

I will look into the ear candling. I have heard of it, but dont know what it entails, so I am not sure on the infant either. Yes, his medication is oral antibiotics, thank goodness. That would be awful to add to the problem instead of helping it.

My oldest, who will be six next month, had constant ear infections till he was two. Then all of a sudden he stopped having them. We were thinking about getting the tubes, but he stopped having them. The doctor told us that in some cases they hit a certian age and they just stop. My youngest got maybe two or three at the most. I've heard tubes are the best thing for chronic ear infections. Good luck with whatever your decision is.

Thank you. Basically they said we will see how it goes when this one clears up. But if they keep happening it is a definite possibility. My mom said the same thing about my sister. They said she would have to have them. And then they just stopped.

If the dr can treat the acid reflux and by propping the baby up in his bed it should help the reflux but keep the ears dry especially at bath time by smearing a little vasaline around the ear canal it repels water and prevents it from entering his ears when bathing

We have been treating the reflux. We arent even sure if that is why he is getting them. It was just a possibility thrown out there by the doctor. Thank you for the suggestion for keeping his ears dry during bathing. That has been a real challenge.

Thank you for the encouragement. I am so glad that so many people have gone through it and been fine. It definitely makes me feel a little better.

When my older son was young I was terrified to have tubes put in. He was 21 months when I finally agreed, and it's the best thing I've ever done for him. (He's 10 now.) The day he came home from the hospital, he finally started repeating words. He was not talking before because every time you have an ear infection or fluid in your ears it is hard to hear. It is like being under water 24/7. Plus the pain of earaches is horrendous. ENTs do these surgeries all the time. There is nothing to worry about, and it will improve the quality of your son's life.

My sisters kids ( 8 and 4) both had tubes put in their ears and it helped with both. I am not sure on the procedure and all that but I know what the other people posted sound pretty accurate.
My son is 11 months and also has acid reflux (we have him on previcid). I had no idea about the more frequent ear infections with children with acid reflux. He just got his first ear infection (that we know of - he didn't show any signs except he ran a little fever but wasn't tugging on his ears or acting sick!) a couple of weeks ago. I am going to ask his Dr about that though! Thanks for the info. I know I will be looking more carefully at smaller signs that he could be developing an ear infection.

In a way I want him to start pulling on his ear right away that way I know something is wrong! Like your child, our son is such a happy baby - even when he is sick! He doesn't act like he is sick. I mean I can tell but to anyone else that really doesnt' know him, you can't tell.
Not to change the subject but when did you find out that your son had acid reflux? And what treatments have you gone through in his life time and are you having to do anything now? I am curious obviously because my son has it and also because everyone keeps telling me he will grow out of it but yet I am skeptical. They kept assuring me at 6 months he would.. but he didn't.. then it was 9 months.. then he didn't.. Now they are saying that when he starts walking he should grow out of it.... Don't get me wrong, it has improved ALOT. He doesn't spit up nearly as much as he use to (I use to literally have to keep him in his swing for two hours after he eat to let it settle before he could get down on the floor other wise all of it would be out of his little tummy). Now that he is a full time crawler he can usually be okay with being put on the floor almost immediatlly after meals (here and there he will spit up but not as bad nor as often).
But I am just curious as to what your experience with it has been.
Thanks and sorry to change the subject!

Not a problem. My doctor says its very common. I just wonder why you dont hear too much about it. Though I do think I remember reading that some babies that are diagnosed with colic are actually reflux babies as well. It sounds like your son is also doing well despite it. So we must be doing something right.

My son didnt really start pulling on his ears until it got pretty bad. And he is such a happy baby, we had no idea. A couple days before he started pulling on them, he would fuss a bit more than usual at bedtime and not want to lay on his back. I didnt put it together until the ear pulling started. He never even ran a fever. In fact, the only reason we went to the doctor today was he broke out in hives. Not terrible ones, but they were there and it worried me. The doctor said it was a mild reaction to the infection. Thank goodness for it, or I would have been oblivious for a couple more days yet again about the ear infection. Hopefully yours doesnt have this problem. I know it is rough when the little ones are sick, especially since you cant do very much to help them be more comfortable.

My sister lived with me when her youngest was born. He had ear infections from the 3 week of life. It was a constant battle and he spent most of his first 4 years on so many different antibiotics we lost count. My sister feared the tubes so she just kept getting the anitbiotics. Finally, I convinced her to go ahead with the tubes. Now, he is 13 and there is not much choice in antibiotics when he needs them because he had so many when younger. They do no good.
So please, tubes will save you so many headaches now and in the future and your child will not suffer through those horrible ear infections and be in pain and miserable anymore. Life will be much happier for you and your baby now and you in the future when he gets ill.

Thank you. I hadnt even considered the long term effect of the antibiotics. I was sick a lot as a child and now it is hard to find something that works for me when I am truly ill. It does seem the tubes are pretty common and even helpful.

I know first hand what it's like to have ear infections, I got them so bad to the point of bleeding when I was a kid. They did try putting tubes in my ears twice but both times they fell out and I personally don't think it was worth having to go through the surgury for. Usually kids outgrow this and I was about 12 when I stopped getting them. Have you tried having your little guy lay on a heating pad (set to a low setting), I remember this was very sooothing when I had infections.

Thank you for your point of view. With having experienced it. I will definately try the heating pad. Nobody had suggested that. Maybe that will help a bit. I have been looking for a way to comfort him. Thank you so much.

Thank you. My mom told me to wait it out for a while too. She said they wanted her to get them for my sister, and they put it off for a bit, and she outgrew them. His pediatrician said if we can make it past the rest of cold and flu season, hopefully we will be in good shape and not need them.

My daughter is encountering the same problem with ear infections since she hit a year old. 4 of my sister's 5 kids have had tubes in their ears because of horrible recurrent ear infections... they do help in most cases.. but, when her 3 year old was 15 months they had to put them in his ears and even with the tubes in his ears, he has still gotten so many ear infections. If your child keeps getting ear infections, that's the only other option to try--I'm thinking I'm headed down that road too. Thanks for the information about the acid reflux info and ear infections, I never heard of that. Very interesting. Good luck with your little one.

Thank you. I hope it all works out. Yeah, I found the acid reflux thing kind of interesting too. I suppose it makes sense though. I have been trying to keep him upright after feedings in hopes that it will help a bit, but that nighttime feeding is hard when he wants to go to sleep.

my youngest who is now 15 had tubes in her ears from 6 months to 8 years. She was always getting ear infections and when I called the doc on one time to explain the screaming she was doing, the doc said it was for attention. Well, that attention scream made her ear bleed due to an ear infection that was so bad that it popped a hole in her eardrum. You could bet that doc did house calls after that for every little thing,,,,she put tubes in my daughers ears and it helped. She had to wear plugs in her ears to go swimming for you can't get water in them. The canel is open, but at age 8, your ears are too wide for the tubes, so they have to stop then, MY daughter never had an ear infection while haveing the tubes, nor did she after 8yrs. So, yes, if the doc says it is best, from my experience, it is.....they fall out on their own when the job is done, then usually the doc will tell you if the ears are fine or if you need to put more tubes in your childs ear(s)

Thank you. I am hoping we dont have to. But it seems like it is going that way. Poor guy. I feel so sorry for him. Right now he just wants to sleep, but he falls asleep and then turns to his left side (the worse one) and then wakes up whimpering. I am glad to see that they help.

Tubes are a great thing for a child who has chronic ear infections my son has had tubes 3 times now. (as you grow they work them selves out)When we had his tubes put in at 16 months it was like he was a differnt child he talked and spoke and just was so good no more fussyness or crying.
They put the child to slepp and put a slight incison in the ear drum and attach the tube. You must cover the ears when swimming or batheing.
Believe me tubes are a great thing if it keeps them from having antibiotics and pain

Thank you. I have been worried since the doctor mentioned them this afternoon. He is just so little and the thought of surgery terrifies me. But I know he is miserable with these ear infections too. It makes me feel a little better to know that they actually help.

My son had ear infections all of the time when he was a baby too and they did end up putting tubes in his ears too and it was a tremendous thing. He did not have any more ear infections at all. Helped him alot. It was well worth the money and that was 20 some years ago so I would think the technology would be so much better now. It helps with the drainage so does not have any more ear infections. I would say for you to go for it.
