My wife has completed her first trimester of pregnancy and entered into the second trimester. The gyno, whom we visited adviced us not to go for a sonography in the 13 weeks of pregnancy, but would advice only in the 15-17th week.
I on reading all the online pregnancy portals, was of the idea that after 13 weeks the sonography is done. Now I am perplexed? As this happens to be my first child, I need some more information to get things cleared. Can anyone help me clear this mess in me?

I had my first ultrasound at around 10 weeks. We weren't really sure how far along I was, so that helped measure the baby to determine the due date. It's more accurate to measure when the baby is smaller. I had the next sonogram at 20 weeks, to look for any health problems with the baby and we found out the gender.
My sister on the other hand, had ultrasounds every 4 weeks, it was a routine when she had her checkups. This usually is done if it's a high risk pregnancy, but hers wasn't, not sure why that was standard procedure. I think it really depends on the doctor and the pregnancy.

I don't want to sound like a critic of doctors, but often the deciding factor is what the mother has for insurance. Ultrasound is an expensive procedure & those machines have to be paid for, some less than ethical practices will push for as many as the insurance company will pay for.
