Anybody knows what is the difference of "hopes" and "expectation". At first I think it's has the same meaning. But I heard from the song of muse titled Starlight those 2 words are used together.
.........
Our hopes and expectation
black holes and revelation
........

Ossie16D is correct. We can hope something will (or won't) happen, but not expect the outcome to be what we want. Our expectations are what we think will happen. For example, I expect my husband will be home at 7:30 in the morning.

Our hopes are what we would like to happen whereas our expectations are what we think will happen. Sometimes both our hopes and expectations are met and others they are not.
There a saying, hope for the best but expect the worst. :)
