it is good to know that there were no complications arising from the incident. children's wounds easily get infected because they are very active.

Your poor little niece Shaun and I do hope that she is okay now and not upset at all by the visit to the Emergency Room, which can often be a little bit scary for children. I know we should always be careful when kids are around but the fact is that no matter how much caution we take, there will always be some danger for them.
I must say that I never thought about toothpicks, although we always put them in the bin when we are finished with them, so it seems that is not a bad habit to have. The thing with kids of this age is that their skin is still not touch which means they can be in danger from things like toothpicks, whereas with an adult it probably would hardly puncture the skin. The skin on any toe is particularly soft on the sides because generally at aged 4, they wear shoes everywhere.
Although I don't have any children left at home (mine is 31), I do appreciate the fact that you have passed this timely warning on so that others are aware of the potential danger from a toothpick, which we all consider to be relatively harmless.

Yeah I don't have any kids myself. My sister said it scared her so bad when it happened to my neice. She was going to try to take it out but it made her cry and scared her so bad so she rushed her to the er. I am not sure how it got on the floor. her house is very clean. They also have a one year old boy or Peyton is his name my niece's name is Hanna

Ow! Toothpicks, needles, pins, anything with a point can cause damage to delicate skin and can also require a trip to the ER for minor surgery to remove the sharp objects. Thank you for posting this so that others are wary.

Oh my gosh, that is terrible. I would have never thought that tooth picks would be that dangerous. I sure hope the little one is ok. We dont use tooth picks too much but I will be on the lookout for them anyway. Thanks for the warning.

this is the first time that i have heard of something like this happening. most of the toothpicks around here are soft enough to crumble when anybody steps on it. perhaps they get the larger and sturdier ones. i know that there some of these types also which is being sold in the supermarkets. i always buy the soft ones.
