Do you give dowry to the one you'll marry???

A VERY BIG NO!!!!. I believe that this is very prevalent in India. When yu say it is "compulsory" is it by LAW or by the community. If you are referring to expenses towards marriage. I believe that at least in Singapore, the male is responsible to all expenses on the marriage. Unless the bride side makes unreasonable request, then this is borne (the additional request) by the bride side. The bride has her on expense on the engagement day and the house things that she would require after the marriage. Period. My daughter is due to get married. If the proposal ask beyond this then our reply is !!!!!!!. I am strongly against this DOWRY thing.

In Hindy religion, it the bride (girl) who brings dowry the opposite of you what is practised on your side. The amount of dowry varies, it can be in kind or cash. But I would like to add here that it is an evil in our society and it must be stopped,curbed and discouraged. Many parents of girls who cannot afford to pay dowry remain in such a condition that they cannot marry their daughters.

I live in a country where people are enjoying a great variety of cultures and traditions. For most of the population, giving dowries is not practiced, but there is a sizeable portion which practices the giving of dowries. Once a man professes his intention to marry the woman he loves, the amount and the terms of the dowry will have to be talked about and established. Aside from the money, some other things may come into the picture like some animals, some number of chickens, a house and lot and others still as they have agreed on.

DOWRY?!?!?!.... is that a serious question... giving money to get married... i am sorry to say but i think we live in 21st century girl!!! and its 2007 already... i mean we have to respect each and every individual that we live around and with... money is just created by human beings... human beings should never be...atleast i dont measure human beings with money... i seriously think its terrible to take or give money for marraige... i dont think in any religious books there is any mention of giving dowry... its some bad nasty use of the authority from one of the either families concerned in marraige... After all marraige is a institution faith, truth and respect... not a stock market or any trade market .... is it!?!?

Nah, its not in our tradition. In the Philippines we have catholic people and muslim people. As i have known muslim people has to provide dowry to be able to marry a girl. Thats their tradition.
