I don't know your son's exact situation so I can't say for sure if this will apply to him or not but the short answer would be yes an antibiotic is necessary for an abscess. The thing that confuses me is why your dentist only wants him on it for 3 days. As far as I know abscesses must be taken care of by the dentist so unless your son has an appointment in 3 days the antibiotics won't help long term. If he doesn't have an appointment, the swelling will return shortly after going off the antibiotic. It will TREAT the abscess but not CURE it. If the dentist didn't tell you to make an appointment, you should call back and ask. Antibiotics aren't cheap so you won't want to have to keep buying them just to keep the swelling down until your dentist feels like seeing him. You should insist your son get seen ASAP.

Oh ok! See we just went through the same thing with my son. The dentist couldn't get him in for three weeks and he had to be on an antibiotic the whole time. If he even missed one day (if we didn't get the refill in time) his mouth would swell up. Mine had to take the antibiotic right up until his appointment but that may have been because of his heart condition but I wasn't sure. Since he's on the antibiotic and has an appointment soon after, it sounds like you and the dentist are doing the right thing for your son. Good luck! And if the tooth does end up getting pulled it's not that bad. Mine had a lot of bleeding at first and was sore but was up running around by evening. I think we were more worried about it than he was.

We were more worried too! at his age all he knows is "it hurts" I dont let him know also how unsafe is his condition. Last night he had a very slight fever. I dont know if it's because of the tooth. but when I gave him the antibiotics , paracetamol, fever was gone and he slept the whole night ( wow!) now, he's still asleep..

Antibiotics are required for an abcess, however, it won't cure it. THe anitbiotic can relieve any pressure and swelling by getting rid of the infection, but if it is indeed an abcess, the best bet is to have the tooth pulled or root canalled. If there is any swelling around the tooth, the dentist will not treat until a round of antibiotics have been consumed.
So I am going to agree with the dentist on this one! :-)

You're right, the dentist wants the child to take antibiotic for 5-7 days, then perform a root canal to drain the abcess. She doesn't want to extract the tooth because permanent teeth will still come out in around 2 years, and it might cause the permanent teeth to be dispositioned. But you have answered my question, so a + for you too!
