why there is a captain in a ship? what do captain big responsibilities?

The captain is much like a CEO of a company. The captain is responsible for all funtions of the ship and the very ship itself. While, depending on the size of a ship, he has people report to him about the various functions they are directly responsible the captain has the final say and the responsibility to insure all is well with the ship
