Homemade Coasters Using CD's

I remember when AOL used to send out all those CD's to try and get people to sign up for their internet service. We had so many of them that we finally quit saving them. Now AOL does not send them out. PC People still send them out though. I saw this really cute coaster made from the CD's. It was simply crocheted and completely covered the CD. It was really cute. They were made for holidays such as a Christmas Tree in the center for Christmas and a black cat for Halloween. The possibilities are endless. It is an inexpensive way to decorate for holidays and recycle those old CD's at the same time. I also saw one home where they had used the CD's to put under the legs of their furniture. It too was croched over the CD. I personally did not like this as it looked too big to me. I think if they had used a color of yarn that matched the living room better, it would have looked better.

Well, this is interesting. I was just going to color on them with multicolored sharpie markers, glue them back to back, shiny side out, with a ribbon in between, and a flat glass marble on the hole to decorate an outdoor Christmas tree. I would hang plain ones to keep critters away from the garden. I still get them from other companies. I would also use irreparably damaged cd's from my collection. Good post. My daughter loves coasters.

I used to save them all for my Mother, as she volunteers her services at the local school for craft teaching. We were getting them so often but now we dont get very many and I wish I has saved more than I did. The coasters are really cute. You could even cover them with materal to match the room

Now that people are coming up with such creative ways to use them, I wish I had saved all the ones I used to receive in the mail, too! We just didn't know!!

Villageanne - paint the back (where the AOL or whatever printing is of those CDs with the color of your choice, either drill or make a hole in them with a hot needle/nail. USe some dowels and some fishing line to make a mobile. Great summer project for the kids. They look pretty cool moving in the wind

I really like both of these ideas! I think the kids would enjoy making the mobile and then hanging it to scare the birds away from your veggie garden!

We used them one time to make turkeies for thanksgiving. We had them for all the young girls but the older girls had to get in on it and make there own. We cut out several feathers, a head, and a oh what is it called the red flappy thing? any way, we glued it to the CD and let the girls decorate them. We also got the stick on earrings from the Dollar store and they stuck the jewels on to make a pattern and hung them on Christmas trees. They would really capture the lights. I am always looking for craft ideas and will use some of the ones here. Oh I almost forgot: You can glue a picture to the shiny sides of two and glue them together then make a picture mobile with them.

I remember when me and my sister used to get so many of them. I would just use them as coasters, without anything on them, because they were in abundance and so annoying. I heard, that there were ways to make them look nice, and dress them up, as coasters, but I have never done anything like that. If I ever see anything that looks appealing than, I will try that out.

haha thats funny in a way ...I can see where they can make use of CDs for a few things , I have seen a wind chime made from them too ..it was pretty the way the light splashed off of it ...as for the coaster that would be a great use for them ...

When did they stop sending them out? I still get them every once in awhile but not nearly as often. They use to come in nice reusable tins and I would send stuff out in them. My mom is saving all those CDs for something. i have no idea for what but she has a plan for them. I also get them from other companys too. If you want to see a cool light show put one in the microwave.

Coasters are a neat idea for those cds. I can't remember where I was but they had made fish out of them and had them hanging from the ceiling. It was in a kids play area. I thought it was so cool looking but I never found out how they made them

I have tied strings of beads from them and hung them high above my herbs to keep the birds away. If you use big enough beads, especially the metallic ones, and string them closely enough together, they also make a wind chime affect - not really good, but a little bit ~Donna

Thats quite a good idea, I just put two together - shiney sides out and tie then on string to my cherry tree, they catch the light and put little light spots around the garden. Shreks mom uses then to keep the birds and rabbits off her seedlings. I wonder if the hole is big enough to make pom-poms with, mighr give it a try

Making coasters from them is a cool idea. I don't crochet, but I could knit a circle to fit. I need coasters anyway. They also make good reflectors for Christmas lights. You can put the bulb part through the hole and, if it's too small to stay, tape it in or if it's too big to fit, cut or melt the hole to make it fit. They're pretty neat looking.

I have thought about making coaster out of old Cd's also. But like many things I think about...I don't get around to it. ha ha I have so much that keep me busy...it is a wonder I find time to log on myLot! Here is another use for old Cd's.... Spray them with adhesive and then sprinkle some glitter on them. If you have a table the has candle on them as decoration, you can set the candles on the glitter covered CD as a candle holder. Of course, you can color coordinate or use just gold or silver glitter. Either way, when you place the candle in the center, no one will know it is a old CD. :) Tip...if you do not have spray adhesive but you have an old can of spray paint that you are not using...spray it with the paint and sprinkle the glitter on while it is wet. It will stick also. :)

Yes I have heard of people using old CD's. I guess as many of us have ones we don't need some people have come up with ideas for multi use. Good thinking. I wouldn't have a clue how to crochet one but it sounds interesting.
