In the majority of postSoviet republics day on March 8th is marked as day of all women.What did u hear about this day?

I knew about it as I have some russian friends. I knew this started in russia as a political event, but today it is to recognize and honor women in our society. Very common to give women some flowers on this day. As far as I know, this has become an International event, but the tradition in other countries is not as strong as it is in eastern europe.
