How do you make your children volunteer to do the dishes?

Maybe it's just my own observation but in many of my friend's households, dishwashing seems to be a gigantic task that children specially teeners are avoiding. Do you set a schedule for each of them or do you as parents do everything yourselves? Unless of course you have a full time house help, that will make things a lot easier.

I used to hate washing the dishes. When my parents asked me to, I would do anything to get out of it. Even offering to do another chore, as long as I didn't have to wash the dishes. However, when my dad bought a dishwasher, it wasn't so bad anymore. It's so much easier, and a lot faster. I do the dishes everyday now without any fuss at all, and it even gets me in the mood to do other cleaning as well. Getting a dishwasher may not be the answer for everyone, but it sure was for us!

Your lucky to have a dishwasher. Some haven't even seen how one looks like. LOL Considering the continuous increase in electricity cost, many families are not considering having a dishwasher an option. Cheers.

I am a bachelor and I have domestic help ,but if I need to get kids involved in washing dishes then I know what I would do,lol. The pain has to be taken out of doing dishes. We all have to take our turns and fight for doing the dishes while listening to songs and dancing, lol.I once read a story about a kid not wanting to paint his house while his friends were playing videogames .So, he made painting the fence sound like so much fun and exhibited so much enjoyment in doing it that his friends were envious of him and wanted to paint. So,he traded painting his fence with them for playing their videogame, lol.

as a child one of my chores was to do dishes. i hated it but my parents made the rules and i had to abide by them. now that i am a mother i too have my children do chores, including doing dishes. i do them too but they need to learn the responsibility.

My children fight me every inch of the way on this one. It's kind of funny. I thought getting a dishwasher would solve the problem, but it really didn't. After all of these years without one, I finally got one this year and they still fight over who will do them. Most of the time it would be easier to just do them myself, but I can't let them get away with that, so the battle goes on...
