I'm thinking of applying for a caregiver job at an assisted living place. Can anyone tell me exactly what that is? I see there are several things it could be. I'll also be applying for the night shift position so if there are differences please let me know. Thanks!

The place that you are applying to should be able to provide you with a detailed job description however assisted living is just that, you help someone to live as normal a life as possible, bearing in mind possible disabilities or age related factors. Some of the tasks involved may be things like doing the shopping for someone, or the housework, or it could be more involved, especially if a live in carer is required, you may have to help bathe the person or aid them when they need the bathroom. All of this will vary depending on the type of care the unit is providing. Unfortunately, at least in the uK, such jobs are woefully underpaid for such a worthy cause. You should be prepared to have a criminal records check as well.

I used to be what is called a nurse's aid, which I think is the same thing. Is it just 'assisted living' or is it an actual nursing home? What you do will depend entirely on the needs of the clientele. When I worked days I had to give about 10 showers every day, spoon feed lunch and dinner to those who couldn't feed themselves, shave the men every other day, bring snacks, change linens, take people to the bathroom, change their clothing, put them down for a nap... lots of stuff. When I worked nights which is typically an 11-7 shift a lot of my job entailed checking in on the residents who were sleeping and turning over those who were immobile, so they didn't get bed sores. It's a worthwhile job, a noble job... and an incredibly hard job. I became so attached to certain residents, and so aggravated by others! If you enjoy caring for people and are not at all squeemish about bodily functions and fluids, go for it. It's a humbling experience to care for the elderly.

Yeah I'm pretty squeemish about other peoples bodily functions. My sister yesterday pretty much talked me out of it. She was a NA for several years while she was going to school to be a Paramedic.
I do want to help people though so badly.
