Water lillies & Irises

I have been very unsuccessful in growing water lillies, and yet they grow wild in certain parts of the country. Can anyone let me know what I am doing wrong please. The water irises are doing fine and have to thinned out regularly. Look forward to some feed back. Thanks. Have a good day!
