How to react when complemented?

Do you say thank you when somebody tells you "you're getting prettier day by day." or "you have a really nice smile." or "you look slimmer/sexier." Or do you tell them to stop sweet talking you? They say that when you are complemented the right way to respond is to say thank you. Do you or do you not? Why?

I've noticed over the past few years that I try to discount compliments when I receive them. If someone tells me I look nice, I say something bad about my outfit, how cheap it is, it gets all staticky or whatever. I have to try to consciously learn to stop talking, and just smile and say thank you. Nobody needs to hear all the bad stuff I think about....

yeah there is this instinct that kicks in that gets us talking negatively about ourselves, I guess it is all about self confidence. But sometimes it just feels like when you just say thank you, it seems like you think highly of yourself (in some situations).
