Scott Peck, in his book "The Road Less travelled", says that genuine love begins when the feeling ends. In particular, he cites the "falling out of love" stage as the point where couples can realize their potential for genuine love.
Peck categorically says, and I totally agree, that falling in love is not real love. It's all driven by feelings. As couples venture futher into their relationship, they realize that the ecstatic feeling of falling in love doesn't last, that the honeymoon is over, that they have fallen out of love.
What separates real love from mere falling in love is that it is an act of free choice that requires effort and commitment. Falling in love is effortless; you do something for another person because you are driven by strong feelings, and, of course, hormones. But to love genuinely, one needs to exert so much effort to stay committed, with or without feelings, with or without the raging hormones. Genuine love happens between persons who choos-and want-to stay with each other even if they have all the means to be on their own.

That book is a good read. I will try to get my hands on one. Yes, I totally agree with you that genuine love is sticking it out with another no matter what. This is I think by far the most that human love can achieve. The idea of "dying for one's love" as the true meaning of love is already extreme (perhaps that's already the perfect or divine love, which is not anymore humanly possible, as the ingenuity of the act would be questionable). This said, genuine love, then, can be seen among couples who have stayed together through the years.

yes and we also categorize them as unconditional love. :) you can't really choose whom to love but you can feel it right that very moment. :)
