Ever Cut Your Nose To Spite Your Face?

I have been guilty of this so many times, and you probably think I'm being totally obstinate but here goes, I'll leave you to decide. I am on secondment (working in another department other than my own) for a large company, I proved my worth and became an asset to the department, I got on with everyone, and my sense of humour was welcomed and I contributed a lot to the department and I was respected. Well until someone a lazy layabout who had been severely reprimanded for his insubordination, pure laziness and his attitude towards customers was brought into my department, and I was told to go back to my department! For HIM! I was livid, I was angry! Anyhow, he turned out to be just as useless, lazy and gruff to everyone in the department and then a permanent job came up in the department and they asked me to go for it. I told them NO, absolutely NO WAY. After they had treated me. I refused to back down and I stayed where I was a job I hated rather than accept the job. Everyone said I was a fool but I stuck to my principles, principles that probably cost and yes I did cut my nose to spite my face but I had made a stand and I had no regrets for doing so. Have you ever been so stubborn and obstinate, refusing to back down that you have lost out?

Well Wolfie I think you should have thought about it and not let your Stubborness get in the Way. No I have never done that I have to admit. I am stubborn to but I do think about the Pros and cons first and I am sorry dear Friend you are going to have to learn to do this to. You have at the sounds of things messed up for yourself not for them.

I had this problem when I worked for Phillips Electronics ... I was doing a really good job as a junior fault find engineer ... I kept up with all the faults and rarely had to go and ask the more senior engineers for help ... but my pay was only the same as when I had been quality control inspector ... Then one day a Graduate turned up (they were paying him 3 times my salary)... I'd been replaced .. and I was sent back to the quality department .. by lunch time the first day I was asked to go and help the Graduate 'catch up' as he was getting a 'bit' behind ... you've got to be kidding I said .. but being the ever helpful and willing employee wandered over to see how the new 'Graduate specialist' was doing .. I couldn't help but laugh .. he hadn't even started ... he was still trying to 'wire up' the test equipment (which I had left ready set up for him, just needed turning on) ... he asked me how I got it all going (seems while he was in university the equipment had always been turned on ready for use) .. with a lot of panache I leaned over and press the switch on the socket ... stupid bloke hadn't even thought to switch the power on hhahha By the end of the first week he was so far behind that 3 sections of the work force had no work to do ... I negotiated a fantastic payment to go in that weekend and 'catch up' for him ... it took me just 6 hours ... and I was paid for 24 hours work at 3 times my usual salary ... By the end of the second week he was sacked and they begged me to go back .. but they wouldn't increase my pay ... so I stayed where I was doing quality inspection ... nice job with my feet up for several hours a night ...

i cant say i blame you but i think if it was me i would have asked them for an explanation for their behaviour and possibly an apology. if they were willing to admit that they made a mistake then i would consider taking the job back. its a toughie and i know my husband is like you . he would never back down but unfortunately it doesnt make him any happier in himself.i tell him to fight the battles that matter as he tends to fight battle which are not important.obviously a work thing is very important. i have never been in your position but i probably would do what would benefit me finacially in the long run and what would make me the happiest.stuff the pride. it wont pay the bills.

Nope I am not that stubborn. Never have been. Neither is my hubby or we would never be talking to eachother. lol. No just kidding about that part. I would have taken the job just to show up the lazy dude. More than likely he will not last anyway. As for the bosses they could have seen what a mistake they made by not keeping you in that department. Sorry , but I would have taken the job.

Principles are principles are principles. I understand your decision. You have to weigh what you need. For instance, do you need that job more than your pride? You have to decide, man.. :P
