I thought there were only a couple ways to make a Reuben sandwich. But I've seen them without Thousand Island Dressing and other staples. What do you think is the best bread to serve them on - rye bread? The one staple seems to be the ever present sauerkraut.
Tell me, how do you make your Reuben? And please, don't reference Reuben from American Idol. He eats sandwiches, but is not A sandwich. : )

I love reubens. I do mine on rye or pumpernickel, with pastrami, swiss, and of course sauerkraut. If you don't have thousand island you can mix together ketchup, mayo and a bit of pickle relish. But you need to have them with some nice homemade potato chips to really enjoy it!

I havent tried a Reuben sandwich yet and this is the first time ive heard of it. And based on the posts here, it sounds very appetizing. If you dont mind, can you give me an exact recipe for this, and what brands of corned beef is best (i assume you use the canned corned beef)....and im not sure what exactly is sauerkraut, im more familiar with coleslaw. Thanks!

Yes I think rye bread is a must! Actually we always have ours with corned beef, sourkraut and swiss cheeses, and sometimes with thousand island dressing, sometimes without.. Wow, I never heard of other types of reubens, going to read now and see if anyone has posted these other recipies..

I love a good Reuben when it's made the way I like it. I think the way I like it is fairly standard. It's Corned Beef and swiss on rye bread along with sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. I do like extra thousand island dressing on the side to dip it into. We have a couple of places around here that make them. I do know some use pastrami but I don't care for that type of meat on it.

I think a good Reuben sandwich is my favorite sandwich. I like plain yet flavorful. I take my sauerkraut and fry it in olive oil till it is slightly brown. I grill my Rye bread i a skillet with my swiss cheese cheese on it. I fry my corned beef in another skillet. I then add my corned beef and my sauerkraut onto my rye bread and cheese. YUMMY

I absolutely LOVE Reuben sandwiches. They're so good! I like mine on rye bread, thousand island dressing (or a mixture of ketchup and mayo), corned beef, and sauerkraut. There is a deli in my hometown that makes the best reuben sandwiches, and that is how they make theirs.
I have also seen variations where people will put coleslaw on it instead of the sauerkraut, but I've never tried it. It sounds good, though!
